Were not certain whether this is how it was done among the Jedi and the Sith, whether they had to go to the trouble of actually constructing their own lightsabers. Theres no overt reference to any kind of lightsaber vendor in any of the six movies. And if there was one, would he supply both the empire and the rebels? Or would there be some sort of contractual stipulation against that? Youre free to ponder these issues as you build your own weapon by choosing a Jedi or Sith blade, a color to appear when it lights up, and a crystal, which, in the mythology of Star Wars, gives the saber its power. The kit comes with one hilt, two blades, two emitters, two caps, and three crystals. You could even take both blades and build a double-bladed saber. There arent endless possibilities here, leaving the kit somewhat disappointing as a construction toy but its a nice way of customizing your own weapon, depending whether youre good or evil. --Charlie Williams

While Luke Skywalker needed to use only the force in his training to become a Jedi knight (like his morally ambivalent and intermittently evil father), you will need a television set with AV inputs, an RF adaptor if your TV doesnt have those, and four AA batteries which are not included in this challenging lightsaber battle game. Simply plug in the training droid and hoist the rather dinky sword as you follow along on the TV adventures. You get a chance to fight against an array of bad guys like Jango Fett, Darth Maul, Emperor Palpatine (dont let appearances fool you, hes spry), and Anakin Skywalker while you fight alongside Obi-Wan Kenobi, Qui-Gon Jinn, Mace Windu, and others. --Charlie Williams

Take on villains across the galaxy--well, at least around the neighborhood--with this Star Wars lightsaber from Hasbro. With black ridges and other intricate details, the toys massive, silver-colored handle wont win any ergonomics awards, but it does look authentic--like what youd see in the movie. To extend the red, telescopic blade, just press the red button with your thumb and flick your wrist. The result is a little underwhelming, given the size of the handle--though, presumably, if the blade were much longer, kids might be poking each other in the eye, or knocking over the lamp. Once extended, the blade is pretty darn solid; in fact, it takes some effort to retract it again. The saber also features a handy belt clip. --Andy Boynton
